Month of Mary

We are into the heart of the month of May, Month of Mary. This week we shall celebrate the memorial of Our Lady of Fatima, then the Solemnity of Mary Help of Christians on the 24th, and we shall close the month with the feast day of the Visitation on the 31st.

What does true devotion to Mary consist of? Our Father Saint Francis de Sales teaches:

“Some People ordinarily imagine that devotion to Our Lady consists in wearing a rosary in their belts, and it seems to them that it is enough to say the beads without doing anything else. In this they are gravely mistaken, for our dear mistress wishes us to do whatever her Son commands. If you question her and say, ‘Madam, what would you like us to do for you?’ She will answer no doubt, that she desires and wills that you do what she ordered to be done as at the celebrated banquet in Galilee when the wine failed, she said to those who were in charge, ‘Do whatever my Son tells you’” (Sermon of Dec.8, 1622)

‘Do whatever my Son tells you’ (John 2:5). Saints have testified that this is the first and most essential stage of true Marian devotion, as we begin to grow in love for her.
